Design Director · Berlin

Brand and product,
working as one

I build brands worth following and products worth using, and I help companies bring the two together into something that actually drives growth.

Where I
add value

  • 01

    Brand Strategy & Identity

Building brands that have a point of view. Visual identity, tone of voice, and the systems that keep it consistent as companies grow - from first logo to global rollout.

  • 02

    Product & UX Design

Designing products people actually want to use. From funnel optimisation and conversion to full product design systems - always grounded in what users are actually trying to do.

  • 03

    Design Team Leadership

Building and running design teams - hiring, structuring, developing people, setting culture. I've done it from scratch three times and know what it takes to create a team that performs under pressure.

  • 04

    Fractional Design Director

Director-level design thinking for companies not yet ready for a full-time hire. Strategy, team oversight, and execution - without the overhead.

Not the
obvious route

I trained as an architect - which taught me to think in systems, work under hard constraints, and understand that form always has to serve a purpose. That way of thinking shapes everything I do in brand and product design today.

After architecture I co-founded Aeon Form, an award-winning design studio building bespoke funeral products. Multiple European awards. I ran brand, marketing, sales, and PR from zero. I learned what it means to build something from nothing, and what it costs when business decisions go wrong.

Then CYAN.STUDIO, a boutique design agency. One of my clients was AirHelp - a Y Combinator alumni. They asked me to join full-time. I said yes.

Nine years followed, and four different roles. I joined as a Senior Designer, became Art Director, then Director twice over as the job grew. Fast growth, then a pandemic that stopped the business almost overnight, then rebuilding. Three very different companies, same badge.

What I learned across all of it: the craft matters, but teams win or lose on trust. Creating the conditions where talented people do the best work of their careers is the part I care about most.

What makes
the difference

Most Design Directors are strong on craft, average on leadership, and rarely have commercial skin in the game. My path gave me all three - in the hardest possible conditions.

Founder experience

Aeon Form, an award-winning European design studio. CYAN.STUDIO, a boutique agency. And FOMO Spark, where I am now a partner. I've been on the founder side of the table three times - I know what it costs.

Built from zero, three times over

Three times I've built a design function from nothing - including rebuilding AirHelp's after the pandemic left me as the only designer. I know what the first hire looks like and what a team of ten needs.

10 people, four disciplines

Brand design, product design, UX research, and UX writing under one function. Hiring, structure, development, and the hard conversations - the full job, not just the creative direction.

4 roles, 3 promotions, 9 years

Senior Designer, Art Director, then Director twice as the role grew. One company, but the job changed completely each time - fast growth, then survival, then rebuilding.

What people say

Robert is a design leader who pairs strategic thinking with hands-on craft. During our time together at AirHelp, he led the brand and product design function through significant change, building both the systems and the team needed to scale with the company. He brings structure to ambiguity and fosters a genuine can-do attitude in everyone around him.
Márcio Spínola Chief Product Officer, AirHelp

What to
expect

  • 01

I start with the business problem, not the brief

Design that doesn't connect to business outcomes is decoration. I spend time understanding what you're trying to achieve before I touch anything visual.

  • 02

I work at both strategic and executional levels

I can set design direction and I can deliver. I don't just hand off briefs - I stay involved until the work is right.

  • 03

I'm direct about what I think

I'll tell you when something isn't working and why. Good design partnerships require honest conversations, not polite agreement.

  • 04

I bring the team with me

If I'm leading a team for you, I invest in the people - not just the output. A team that trusts each other delivers more than a team that just executes tasks.

  • 05

I build with AI, not around it

At FOMO Spark I automated contracts, invoicing and briefing in two months. The same thinking applies to design operations: less manual overhead, more time on the work that matters.
